West Virginia traffic stop nets man wanted for murder of pregnant Baltimore teenager

On Thursday, the Baltimore Police Department announced that a Baltimore man who was wanted for the shooting murder of a pregnant Baltimore City teenager was arrested in West Virginia and is now back in a Baltimore jail cell.  Malik McCormick, 22, has been charged with the young woman’s first-degree murder.

Background:  On December 4, 2022, at approximately 3:10 a.m., officers responded to the 5600 block of Woodmont Avenue to investigate a call for a shooting.

Upon their arrival, officers observed a pregnant 19-year-old female, later identified as Jaymyra Burrell, suffering from numerous gunshot wounds. Medics transported Burrell to John Hopkins Hospital, where she was pronounced deceased despite life-saving measures.   Burrell was five months pregnant at the time of the shooting, according to her family.

The young woman was gunned down just feet away from the front door of her Northeast Baltimore home.  Her father said he heard the gunshots that took her life.

“I was on my tablet and next thing I know, I heard a guy and a girl arguing and the next thing I knew I heard gunshots,” Janet Baker recalled. “It was a lot like boom boom boom right behind each other.”

After an extensive investigation, Baltimore Homicide Detectives were able to identify Malik McCormick as their suspect in the murder of Jaymyra Burrell.

On July 1, 2023, Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office members arrested the 22-year-old Malik McCormick of Baltimore while conducting a traffic stop in South Charleston, West Virginia.

During the traffic stop, members of the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office discovered that McCormick had an outstanding warrant for the murder of 19- Burrell’s murder.  Deputies transported McCormick to the South Central Regional Jail in West Virginia until authorities from Maryland could take custody of him.

On July 18, 2023, at approximately, McCormick was extradited from South Charleston, West Virginia, to Baltimore, Maryland’s Central Booking Intake Facility, where he was charged with 1st Degree Murder and various handgun violations.
