White Sox game shooting: Female fans shot inside Chicago’s Guaranteed Rate Stadium
Although it seems that none of our larger U.S. cities are immune to the ongoing gun violence epidemic – you would think that we’d at least be safe inside our local baseball parks. That was unfortunately not to be the case when two women were shot inside Chicago’s Guaranteed Rate Stadium last night, on the evening of August 25, during the game played between the Chicago White Sox and the Oakland Athletics.
Major League Baseball (MLB) and the White Sox released the following statement at 2:06 a.m. this morning:
Two fans attending Friday’s game suffered non-life threatening injuries after being struck by bullets. It is unclear to investigators whether the shots were fired from outside or inside the ballpark. The incident continues to be investigated by Area One detectives from the Chicago Police Department. While the police continue to investigate, White Sox security confirms that this incident did not involve an altercation of any kind.
Ballpark video of the incident does not indicate any activity prior to the injuries.
The White Sox are thinking of the victims at this time and wishing them a speedy recovery.
Police in Chicago are investigating the shootings. One of the shooting victims received medical treatment at the stadium, “and later walked out of the ballpark with medics,” according to The New York Post. The other female victim was transported to the hospital. In true Chicago fashion though, the game was played through to the end, with a Chicago win over Oakland, 12-4.
Police said a 42-year-old woman suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in fair condition. A 26-year-old woman also suffered a graze wound to the abdomen and refused medical attention. ~ CBS Chicago
A concert after the game featuring Vanilla Ice, Rob Base and Tone Loc was canceled due to what the White Sox’s main scoreboard desribed as “technical difficulties.”
“Attention Fans. Due to technical issues, tonight’s postgame concert has been canceled,” a message said on the Guaranteed Rate scoreboard. “We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your understanding. Fans holding on-field passes will receive a refund to the original purchaser’s credit card.”
Anyone with any information regarding the shootings is asked to contact the Area One Detective Division at 312-747-8380 or submit an anonymous tip through CPDTIP.com.
