The mother of a 14-year-old boy who was in the world famous Johns Hopkins Hospital awaiting a medical procedure has been charged with the first-degree stabbing murder of her husband – inside their son’s hospital room. Hospital employees reported hearing an argument break out inside the boy’s room on Friday,  October 13.  They then said that 30-year-old Anita Nicole Jones exited the room, informed the staff that her husband tried to kill himself, and that the woman then exited the hospital, according to WBAL-TV in Baltimore.

When the hospital staff went into the room, they found the husband, Christopher Yancey Sr., 33, suffering from multiple stab wounds to his upper body.  Yancey was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after his body was discovered. Police were called to the hospital at approximately 2:13 p.m. on October 13 for reports of a possible suicide.  WBAL quoted Baltimore police media relations Chief T.J. Smith as saying that the stabbing was “disturbing, sad and despicable.”

“This argument escalated, and it appeared that the wife used some sort of sharp-edged object, we don’t know if it was a knife or what at this point, and stabbed the victim more than one time,” Smith said. “This is a world-renowned hospital, Johns Hopkins University, and unfortunately, they weren’t able to save him, so it speaks to how significant these injuries were that occurred inside of a room. It’s sad that an argument escalated into this.  There is a young child without both of his parents now.”

Police said that Jones and her husband were alone in the hospital room at the time of the stabbing and that Yancey’s stab wounds were not consistent with a suicide attempt.  Fox-5 reported that Yancey was pronounced dead shortly after he was discovered in the hospital room and that no weapons were found inside the room. Police secured an arrest warrant for Jones, picked her up and took her to Baltimore City Central Booking where she was charged with first degree murder.  A statement was released by Johns Hopkins’ spokesperson Kim Hoppe who said that the stabbing was an isolated incident.

“At no time were patients, staff or other visitors in danger,” Hoppe said. “We would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the family of the deceased. Since this is a police investigation, we must defer all inquiries to them.”  ~ per The Baltimore Sun

Yancey’s death became the 281st homicide inside the Baltimore City limits this year.
