Yankees’ pitcher Domingo German suspended for 81 games following domestic violence investigation
Only a few days after the calendar clicked over to 2020, Major League Baseball and the New York Yankees released statements regarding the disciplinary actions imposed upon right-handed Yankees’ pitcher, Domingo German, who was suspended back in September 2019 after being investigated for domestic violence allegations involving his girlfriend, with whom he has at least one child. That September domestic violence incident reportedly occurred at German’s home in Yonkers, New York.

On January 2, Major League Baseball announced that German was being suspended for a total of 81 games for violating the league’s domestic violence policy. ESPN shared a statement from MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred which read:
“My office has completed its investigation into the allegations that Domingo German violated Major League Baseball’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy,” Manfred said in a statement. “Having reviewed all of the available evidence, I have concluded that Mr. German violated our Policy and that discipline is appropriate.”
ESPN went on to report that German had already agreed that he wouldn’t be filing any appeals regarding his suspension. He also agreed to receive treatment regarding his behavior and will be making a financial contribution to Sanctuary for Families, a non-profit organization described by their website as being New York City’s “leading service provider and advocate for survivors of domestic violence, sex trafficking and related forms of gender violence.”
On January 2, the New York Yankees released their own statement regarding German’s suspension:
“We remain steadfast in our support of Major League Baseball’s investigative process and the disciplinary action taken regarding Domingo Germán. Domestic violence — in any form — is a gravely serious matter that affects every segment of our society. Major League Baseball has taken the lead in our industry to make domestic violence awareness and prevention a priority, and we will continue to back those efforts. We are encouraged by Domingo’s acceptance of his discipline, and we sincerely hope this indicates a commitment to making a meaningful and positive change in his personal conduct.
“As per the Basic Agreement’s Joint Domestic Violence Policy, the Club will have no further comment on this matter and refer all questions to the Office of the Commissioner.”
German’s annual salary with the Yanks for 2019 was a reported $577,500. He’s expected to make the same amount for the upcoming season – but won’t be receiving any salary during his suspension.
The New York Times reported that German’s 81-day suspension will be retroactive to the games he already missed last season and will include the first 63 games of the upcoming 2020 season. He won’t be facing any criminal charges regarding his domestic violence allegations.
