The original Justice League film that was released to worldwide audiences in 2017 was first envisioned by its original director Zack Snyder – who had to leave the film during the post-production phase due to a family emergency.  Primary direction of the film was taken over and ultimately completed by Joss Whedon  – who although coming into the enterprise with an exemplary history of telling the superhero tale (Agents of S.H.IE.L.D., The Avengers) – missed the mark entirely with the Justice League saga when he abandoned Snyder’s vision for the film and went with his own – which was not well received by the public.

Justice League was a critical failure and a financial failure.

Immediately following the film’s cold reception, we started hearing rumors that Zack Snyder still had access to the original footage. #ReleaseTheSnyderCut first became a passionate rallying social media cry among fans beginning in 2017 and never let up. It evolved and grew into a powerful global movement among cinephiles and comic book fans.

If anything good came out of 2020, it was the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement where fans worldwide were calling for the release of Snyder’s director’s film cut.  In May 2020, HBO Max and Warner Bros. announced that the Justice League film was being re-edited with Snyder back at the helm,

And new scenes with the original cast were also being reshot.

“I want to thank HBO Max and Warner Brothers for this brave gesture of supporting artists and allowing their true visions to be realized. Also a special thank you to all of those involved in the SnyderCut movement for making this a reality,” said Snyder.

“Since I got here 14 months ago, the chant to #ReleaseTheSnyderCut has been a daily drumbeat in our offices and inboxes. Well, the fans have asked, and we are thrilled to finally deliver. At the end of the day, it really is all about them and we are beyond excited to be able to release Zack’s ultimate vision for this film in 2021. This could never have happened if it weren’t for the hard work and combined efforts of the teams at HBO Max and Warner Bros. Pictures,” said Robert Greenblatt, Chairman, Warner Media Entertainment and Direct-To-Consumer.

On June 18, 2020, Snyder released a sneak video peek of the new film, what had now become well known as Zack Snyder’s Justice League.

Synapsis: Zack Snyder’s Justice League

In Zack Snyder’s Justice League, determined to ensure Superman’s (Henry Cavill) ultimate sacrifice was not in vain (see Batman v. Superman,) Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) aligns forces with Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) with plans to recruit a team of metahumans to protect the world from an approaching threat of catastrophic proportions. The task proves more difficult than Bruce imagined, as each of the recruits must face the demons of their own pasts to transcend that which has held them back, allowing them to come together, finally forming an unprecedented league of heroes. Now united, Batman (Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and The Flash (Ezra Miller) may be too late to save the planet from Steppenwolf, DeSaad and Darkseid and their dreadful intentions.
