Zero tolerance for NFL’s Damon Arnette, arrested in Vegas, cut by the Chiefs
It’s barely been two weeks since former Raiders cornerback Damon Arnette signed with the Kansas City Chiefs. In a surprising move – or perhaps not so surprising if you’ve been following Arnette’s career – the Chiefs cut the 25-year-old after he was arrested in Las Vegas on January 28.
Following his arrest, Arnette was charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, one count of carrying or concealing a weapon without a permit and two drug possession charges, according to MSN.
“The bottom line: The Raiders will not tolerate this type of behavior,” said Raiders general manager Mike Mayock.
Reportedly, Arnette’s arrest came about after an argument about a firearm ensued Friday evening while the former cornerback was in Vegas. “Markell Surrell, 20, also was arrested and charged with carrying or concealing a weapon without a permit,” according to a report by CBS News.
Both Arnette and Surrell made bail by Saturday morning and have court appearances scheduled for March 29.
Arnette had signed with the Chiefs on January 20 with contract stipulations that included a commitment to “intense counseling and zero tolerance.” Those stipulations were based on his prior history of exhibiting bad behavior.
Prior to signing with the Chiefs, Arnette had formerly joined the Las Vegas Raiders as a first-round draft pick. He proved to be a disappointment for the Raiders and was terminated from that team, …”in November of 2021 after a video surfaced of him displaying a gun and making threats [to kill somebody],” according to a separate article from MSN.
Arnette was also named in several lawsuits last year and looking at possible charges of assault and a hit-and-run. The Chiefs were hoping for the best when they signed Arnette to that reserve/futures contract; but they too were disappointed. The good money is saying that the Chiefs was probably the cornerback’s last shot to play with the NFL.
