Hayden Panettiere, the former child star who rose to international fame in Heroes and later captivated audiences as country singer Juliette Barnes on Nashville, has died at 36. Her father, Skip Panettiere, announced her death Sunday, Aug. 16, in a statement provided to ABC News. No cause of death has yet been announced.

Panettiere, who would have turned 37 on Aug. 21, spent much of her life in the public eye. She began acting as a young child and went on to build a career spanning television, film and music, including roles in Remember the Titans, I Love You, Beth Cooper, Scream 4 and Scream VI.

Yet, behind that successful career was a deeply personal struggle that Panettiere increasingly chose to discuss publicly. She spoke candidly about alcoholism, drug and substance abuse, depression, anxiety and postpartum depression following the 2014 birth of her daughter, Kaya, whom she shared with former Ukrainian professional boxer Wladimir Klitschko.

In interviews, Panettiere described years of feeling trapped in what she called a cycle of depression, anxiety, alcoholism and substance abuse. She entered treatment in 2015 while filming Nashville and later underwent an eight-month rehabilitation program in 2020. Her accounts of withdrawal described severe physical and emotional symptoms, underscoring how difficult recovery had become.

Panettiere also revealed that her substance-use problems had begun in part after she was introduced to prescription drugs as a teenager. She later said that drugs and alcohol eventually became something she felt she could not live without.

Her struggles extended beyond addiction. After Kaya’s birth, Panettiere experienced postpartum depression, a condition she discussed openly in an effort to challenge the stigma surrounding maternal mental health. In 2018, while she was struggling with addiction and mental-health problems, Kaya went to live full-time with Klitschko. Panettiere later emphasized that the decision was made with her daughter’s welfare in mind and was not simply a matter of abandoning her child.

“I was drowning,” Panettiere said of entering treatment, describing her determination to find a path back from addiction. Her willingness to speak publicly about those experiences helped make recovery, depression and postpartum mental health part of the larger conversation surrounding her career.

Panettiere’s recently published memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, provided an even more intimate account of her life. She wrote about childhood fame, addiction, recovery, family turmoil, domestic abuse and experiences she said left her feeling vulnerable and unsafe within Hollywood. She also reflected on the devastating death of her younger brother, actor Jansen Panettiere, who died in 2023 at 28 from a heart condition.

Her health struggles were at times physically serious. Panettiere previously revealed that she had been hospitalized with jaundice and said doctors warned that her liver was in danger of failing. She also described the physical toll of alcohol withdrawal during treatment.

Despite those hardships, Panettiere increasingly sought to turn painful experiences into something meaningful. In her memoir, she wrote about finding greater empathy for herself and others, prioritizing her health and becoming more involved in causes including animal rights, environmental protection and mental-health awareness.

She also became an outspoken supporter of Ukraine after Russia’s invasion, raising money for medical supplies and protective equipment and using her public platform to advocate for Ukrainians.

Panettiere’s death leaves behind a complicated but remarkable legacy: a performer who achieved fame at an extraordinarily young age, struggled publicly with addiction and serious mental-health challenges, endured profound personal losses, and ultimately chose to tell her story in her own words.

Her father remembered her as “an incredible light” who brought love and joy to those around her and to millions who watched her onscreen.

For many fans, that light will remain inseparable from the courage Panettiere showed in revealing the darker chapters of her life—and reminding others that recovery, resilience and compassion can exist alongside profound pain.
