Adopted man discovers his bio dad is Doobie Bros.’ Michael McDonald, after nearly 60 years

For nearly six decades, Michael Goessling knew he had been adopted. What he did not know was that his biological father was one of the most recognizable voices in American music. That extraordinary secret was revealed after a 23andMe DNA test taken by a previously unknown half-brother led to Goessling, a St. Louis man, and ultimately identified five-time Grammy Award winner Michael McDonald as his biological father.
The discovery, reported Oct. 2, 2026, has transformed a decades-old family mystery into an emotional reunion involving two men who already shared something unexpected: a lifelong love of music.

A mystery begins to unravel: Goessling was adopted as an infant and raised by Paul and Kay Goessling in the St. Louis area. He has described his childhood as “charmed” and repeatedly credited his adoptive parents with giving him a loving and secure home.
His biological parents, meanwhile, were both just 14 years old when Goessling was conceived. Their families ultimately decided that adoption was the best option for the teenage couple and their child. Goessling’s biological mother remained connected to McDonald over the years, even though the two eventually dated other people, married and had additional children.
Nearly 58 years after Goessling’s birth, his biological mother and father sought to reconnect with the son they had placed for adoption. A letter from an attorney representing his biological mother arrived on May 6, 2025. The letter explained that she believed Goessling was the son she had placed for adoption through Catholic Charities.
Goessling soon spoke with his biological mother and arranged to meet her on his 58th birthday—the same date, 58 years earlier, on which she had given birth to him.

Then came the voice on the phone: After meeting his birth mother, Goessling received a voice message from his biological father. The voice sounded strangely familiar.
“Whoa, what a voice,” Goessling recalled thinking.
He still had no idea that the man behind it was Michael McDonald.
During their first telephone conversation, Goessling asked the mysterious “Mike” what he did for a living.
“I’m a musician,” McDonald told him.
That answer led to another clue. McDonald mentioned that he was preparing to perform in St. Louis on Sept. 4, 2025.
Goessling began searching the concert schedule and discovered that the Doobie Brothers were playing at the Hollywood Casino Amphitheater.
The pieces suddenly fell into place.
“Are you Michael McDonald?” Goessling finally asked.
McDonald chuckled before answering, “Yeah, I’m afraid so.”
Goessling said he initially thought he might be the victim of some elaborate prank.
“I thought I was being punked for a second,” he recalled.

A remarkable musical connection: The revelation was especially astonishing because Goessling had been a Michael McDonald and Doobie Brothers fan since childhood.
McDonald joined the Doobie Brothers in 1975, becoming the band’s lead vocalist and keyboardist during one of its most successful periods. His soulful voice helped define hits including “Takin’ It to the Streets,” “What a Fool Believes” and “Minute by Minute.”
McDonald later established a successful solo career, recording numerous albums and earning five Grammy Awards. His distinctive voice and songwriting also led to collaborations with major artists, including Steely Dan, Kenny Loggins and James Ingram.
McDonald has also remained associated with the Doobie Brothers, including touring with the group in recent years.
Goessling remembers first hearing McDonald with the Doobie Brothers as a child and becoming an immediate fan.

There was an almost unbelievable twist: Goessling had already seen the Doobie Brothers perform twice—once in the 1980s and again in the early 1990s—without knowing that the man onstage was his biological father.
“Little did I know,” Goessling said of the connection.
He even recalled that people began comparing his appearance to McDonald after Goessling grew out his hair and white beard during the COVID-19 pandemic.

A father who carried the mystery for decades: For McDonald, discovering that his son had grown up healthy and happy brought powerful emotions.
“I always carried that guilt with me,” McDonald said.
But learning that Goessling had been raised by loving parents gave him a sense of relief.
“Just to know that he was okay and that he had a good life … was a great reward,” McDonald said.
McDonald also praised Paul and Kay Goessling for providing the childhood he believed he could not have offered his son at the time.
“The real rock stars in this story for us are his adoptive parents,” McDonald said, describing them as the people who gave Michael “everything a child needs in terms of love and security.”
Goessling’s adoptive father, Paul, died shortly before Christmas 2024. Goessling has said the two were extremely close. Only months later, another father entered his life.
“After losing my father, I get a letter, and Mike pops up,” Goessling said. “Another father enters my life, my world.”

From strangers to family: Father and son eventually met face-to-face, turning nearly 60 years of separation into a deeply personal family reunion. Goessling recalled that McDonald simply opened his arms and gave him a big hug.
“He just put his arms out, just gave me a big old bear hug and told me he loved me, and I told him the same,” Goessling said.
McDonald described meeting his son as “a wonderful, wonderful experience.”
The reunion also brought an unexpected new role for McDonald: grandfather.
“Yeah, that’s still sinking in for me. What a gift,” McDonald said.

Goessling said the similarities between himself and his biological relatives have continued to surprise him. McDonald’s wife, Amy, and Goessling’s newly discovered half-sister have noticed familiar mannerisms and expressions that seem to run through the family.

What’s next? Rather than trying to recreate the 58 years they lost, Goessling and McDonald appear to be building a relationship from where they are today. The two now speak frequently and text “all the time,” according to Goessling.
Their relationship is also unfolding alongside a newly connected extended family. Goessling’s adoptive family has embraced his biological relatives, with Goessling describing the remarkable reunion simply: “Everybody’s in love with everybody.”
For Goessling, however, the story is ultimately about much more than discovering a famous father. He remains deeply grateful to the teenage parents who made the decision to place him for adoption and to the parents who raised him.
“I just want to thank them for the choices they made on my behalf and for giving me a shot in this world,” he said.
Nearly six decades after his birth, Goessling now has something he could never have imagined as an adopted child: the chance to know where he came from while continuing to honor the family that raised him.
“My cup overflows,” he said.
And for McDonald, a long-lost son has become something he never expected to receive this late in life—a new family relationship, a new generation of memories and, as he put it, “a gift.”
