Mercedes strikes highway worker during I-97 crash in Anne Arundel work zone
MILLERSVILLE, Md. — A highway worker was injured early Wednesday morning after a two-vehicle crash on northbound I-97 sent a Mercedes into an active construction zone near Route 32 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland State Police said.
The crash happened at approximately 12:45 a.m. on October 7, as a Toyota Camry and a Mercedes were traveling northbound on I-97 approaching a lane closure.
According to the preliminary investigation, Javed Iqbal, 47, of Baltimore, was driving the Toyota and began slowing for the work-zone lane closure. Police said that, for reasons still under investigation, a Mercedes operated by Darrell Lamont Gough, 62, of Elkridge, struck the Toyota from behind.
The impact sent the Mercedes veering into the active work area, where it struck a 31-year-old highway worker and a portable light tower.
The injured worker was taken by ambulance to a local trauma center for treatment. No other injuries were reported.
A Maryland State Police trooper was also at the scene when the crash occurred, sitting in a marked patrol vehicle with its emergency lights activated.
Impairment being investigated: Investigators have not yet determined what caused the collision. However, Maryland State Police said they believe impairment may have been a contributing circumstance.
No charges have been announced at this time. Police said potential charges are pending completion of the investigation.
The Maryland State Police Crash Team is leading the investigation. Once the investigation is completed, the case will be submitted to the Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney’s Office for review.
Troopers from the Glen Burnie and Annapolis barracks responded to the scene, along with Anne Arundel County emergency medical personnel. The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration assisted with closing lanes and managing the work zone.
The resulting lane closures remained in place for approximately three hours. The investigation remains active.
