A heartbreaking investigation into the disappearance of a 10-year-old Philadelphia girl has resulted in murder charges against her foster mother after the child’s body was discovered inside a vehicle in New Jersey. Carprice Williams, 36, of Philadelphia, is accused of murdering Malayshia Alford, the young girl who had been living in her care. Williams faces seven criminal charges, including murder, endangering the welfare of a child, abuse of a corpse, tampering with evidence and possession of an instrument of crime.
Malayshia was last believed to have been seen alive on October 22 at her West Philadelphia home. Four days later, she was reported missing, prompting an extensive search involving Philadelphia police, the FBI and concerned community members.
The investigation took a grim turn on November 4, when authorities discovered the child’s body inside the trunk of a vehicle at an apartment complex in Lindenwold, New Jersey, approximately 20 miles from Philadelphia.
Surveillance Video Provided Critical Breakthrough: Investigators say surveillance footage captured shortly before 2 a.m. on October 26 showed an individual carrying what appeared to be the child’s body inside a bag from the Philadelphia residence and placing it into a vehicle.
According to Assistant District Attorney Ashley Toczylowski, investigators used the footage to identify a vehicle and locate a person associated with it. Information provided by that individual eventually led authorities to a second vehicle in New Jersey, where Malayshia’s body was found.
Prosecutors emphasized that the person seen removing the body from the home was not Williams. Authorities have not publicly identified that individual. A preliminary autopsy determined that Malayshia died from blunt force trauma, and the medical examiner ruled her death a homicide. Investigators also disclosed disturbing indications that the child may have experienced abuse before her death.
“We do have the indication that there were instances of abuse happening, and that items were used to carry out that abuse,” Toczylowski said during a November 5 news conference.
Foster Care System Faces Questions:Â The tragedy has also raised serious questions about the circumstances surrounding Malayshia’s foster care placement and the oversight intended to protect vulnerable children. Philadelphia’s Department of Human Services confirmed that Malayshia was in its custody and receiving foster care services through Pennsylvania Mentor, with case management provided by Catholic Community Services.
District Attorney Larry Krasner said his office would be communicating with the city’s Department of Human Services as investigators seek additional information about the child’s placement and circumstances. Pennsylvania Mentor has expressed heartbreak over Malayshia’s death and confirmed that it is cooperating fully with law enforcement. The organization declined to comment further because of the ongoing investigation.
Authorities have not publicly detailed whether previous complaints or concerns had been raised about the child’s living situation.
Community Mourns the Young Victim: News of Malayshia’s death has devastated her family, classmates and the Philadelphia community. Students and teachers at Robert E. Lamberton School, where Malayshia attended classes, created memorial posters in her honor. Neighbors also gathered outside her former home, leaving pink balloons, teddy bears, candles and other tributes.
Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker described the tragedy as deeply personal, saying the investigation would continue until authorities uncovered all the facts and pursued justice. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin J. Bethel also spoke about the life taken from the young girl, emphasizing that Malayshia deserved safety, love and the opportunity to grow up.
Family members, meanwhile, have asked the public for compassion and support as they struggle to process the devastating loss.
Foster Mother Held Without Bail: Williams was arraigned early November 6 and ordered held without bail at the Philadelphia Detention Center. She has been appointed a public defender, and her preliminary hearing is scheduled for November 23.
The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding Malayshia’s death, the handling of her body and the foster care arrangements that placed her in Williams’ home.
For a community still mourning a child whose life ended far too soon, the search for answers is far from over. For more on this tragic tale, see the video accompanying this article.
