Broward County man charged in the accidental shooting death of his six-year-old nephew

On November 7, Florida’s Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) reported that Detectives with their Homicide Unit, in collaboration with their Violent Intervention Proactive Enforcement Response (V.I.P.E.R.) investigators, arrested 25-year-old Carika Hall of Tamarac in connection to the fatal and accidental shooting of his nephew, six-year-old Odaine Hall.  

The heartbreaking incident occurred at approximately 3:29 p.m. on Monday, September 30, near the 5600 block of Rock Island Road in Tamarac. BSO deputies and Tamarac Fire Rescue responded to reports of a shooting that occurred inside a residence at that address. When emergency crews arrived on scene, they located the child suffering from a single gunshot wound. The six-year-old was tragically pronounced dead on scene.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the victim, Odaine, was being watched by Carika, his uncle, when the child got hold of an unsecured firearm and accidentally shot himself.

On Wednesday, November 6, BSO’s V.I.P.E.R. unit arrested Carika at his home in Tamarac. The uncle faces one count each of culpable negligence and neglect of a child. Carika Hall stood before a judge on the morning of November 7.

“Mr. Hall, you’re here pursuant to a warrant, coupled with negligence, allowing a minor access to a weapon, involving injury or death, and neglect of a child without bodily harm. I do find probable cause,” said the judge.  ~ WSVN

The uncle was released from jail after paying his bond that same evening.  The judge also decreed Hall is not allowed to own any weapons.

The Sheriff’s Office reminded gun owners to properly secure their firearms and to always practice essential gun safety tips. A firearm should always be unloaded and stored in a locked storage container that isn’t easily accessible to minors. Doing so protects children and adults by preventing unintentional shootings and incidents like this one.
