Oxon Hill shooting victim dies; D.C. man faces murder charge

A shooting in Oxon Hill that initially left a 45-year-old man critically wounded has become a homicide investigation following the shoting victim’s death more than a week later.
Prince George’s County Police say 45-year-old Oscar Guevara died Aug. 16, nine days after he was shot in the 6200 block of Oxon Hill Road.
The shooting happened shortly before 6:45 p.m. on Aug. 7, when officers responded to the area and found Guevara suffering from gunshot wounds. He was transported to a hospital for treatment but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Investigators quickly identified a suspect.
Police say detectives with the department’s Gun Crimes Unit, working with Washington Area Metropolitan Transit Authority Police, identified 25-year-old Jeremiah Hammond of Washington, D.C., as the shooter.
Hammond was charged with attempted murder and related offenses on Aug. 8 and was transported to the Department of Corrections, where he remains held without bond.
With Guevara’s death, the investigation has now shifted to the Prince George’s County Police Department’s Homicide Unit. Detectives are consulting with the State’s Attorney’s Office regarding additional criminal charges that could be filed in connection with the fatal shooting.
Police have not released additional details about what led to the shooting, and the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
