Salisbury man charged with murder after altercation with local woman turned deadly

A Salisbury man is looking at murder and assault charges after police say a woman was shot and killed during a verbal altercation Thursday night in Wicomico County.

Maryland State Police identified the accused as Gage Mitchell, 29, of Salisbury, who was arrested shortly after the shooting.  Mitchell was charged with first- and second-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault and multiple firearm-related offenses.

Mitchell is being held without bond at the Wicomico County Detention Center.

According to Maryland State Police, troopers from the Salisbury Barrack were called to a residence in the 400 block of Ethels Way shortly after 8 p.m. Thursday following a report of a shooting.

When troopers arrived, they found Jordan Holt, 29, of Salisbury, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Emergency medical personnel pronounced Holt dead at the scene.

Investigators say Holt and Mitchell had been involved in a verbal altercation inside the residence when Mitchell allegedly shot her. Police said Mitchell then fled from the home.

Troopers located Mitchell a short time later and took him into custody without incident, police said.

Maryland State Police Crime Scene Technicians from the agency’s Forensic Sciences Division processed the residence for evidence. A firearm was subsequently recovered as part of the investigation.

The response involved multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Maryland State Police Aviation Command and Criminal Enforcement Division, along with officers and deputies from the Fruitland Police Department, Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office and Salisbury Police Department.

The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit continues to lead the investigation.  Mitchell is accused of the crimes and is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
