BALTIMORE — A 12-year-old girl was killed after being caught in the crossfire of a shooting that erupted during a youth football event at Leon Day Park Saturday evening, turning a community celebration into a scene of tragedy.
Baltimore police said officers responded to the park in the 1200 block of North Franklintown Road at about 6:15 p.m. Oct. 3 after reports of gunfire. The shooting occurred as a youth football league was holding a homecoming event.
Police Commissioner Richard Worley said preliminary information indicates that two adult men were involved in an argument that apparently began over a parking space. The dispute escalated when the men allegedly pulled guns and fired at each other.
The 12-year-old girl, who was believed to be watching the football game, was struck by gunfire. Officers provided emergency aid before she was transported to a hospital, where she later died.
A 25-year-old woman was also wounded at the scene. Two additional men, ages 28 and 23, separately went to area hospitals seeking treatment for gunshot wounds. The three surviving victims were reported to have non-life-threatening injuries and were in stable condition.
Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott expressed outrage over the girl’s death, emphasizing the devastating consequences of an argument that escalated into gun violence.
Police were searching for at least two male suspects Saturday night, and no arrests had been announced. Investigators asked anyone who witnessed the shooting or has information about those responsible to contact homicide detectives.
The shooting also prompted police to close part of North Franklintown Road as investigators processed the scene.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to call Baltimore police at 410-396-2100 or Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7LOCKUP. Anonymous tips may also be submitted through Metro Crime Stoppers of Maryland.
