Collin Gosselin, who grew up in front of millions of television viewers on Jon & Kate Plus 8, is publicly accusing his mother, Kate Gosselin, of years of physical and emotional abuse, isolation and mistreatment during his childhood.

The 22-year-old details the allegations in his new memoir, In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood, released Oct. 13, 2026. In interviews promoting the book, including appearances on Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast and ABC’s Good Morning America, Collin described what he says was a deeply troubled childhood behind the family’s carefully presented reality-TV image.

Remembering Collin Gosselin: Collin is one of the Gosselin sextuplets, born in 2004 alongside siblings Alexis, Hannah, Joel, Leah and Aaden. The family also includes older twin sisters Cara and Mady.

The family became famous in 2007 when TLC launched Jon & Kate Plus 8, documenting the daily challenges of raising eight children. The show featured the parents’ marriage, family milestones and the demanding routines of life with twins and sextuplets. Following the couple’s separation and divorce, the series continued as Kate Plus 8, focusing primarily on Kate and the children.

Collin says he increasingly resented growing up on camera and tried to distance himself from filming. He believes his resistance made him the family’s so-called difficult child and contributed to his mother’s alleged mistreatment of him.

Why Did Jon and Kate Gosselin Divorce? Jon and Kate’s marriage fell apart amid mounting marital tensions, intense media scrutiny and the pressures of raising eight children while starring in a reality-TV series.

The couple announced their separation in 2009, and their divorce followed that year. Their split became a major public spectacle, with disagreements over family life, custody and the future of the television show playing out under intense scrutiny.

In his memoir, Collin recalls overhearing conversations that led him to believe his father did not want the children’s lives continually filmed. He also alleges that the breakdown of his parents’ marriage coincided with increasing isolation from Jon and his siblings.

What Abuse Does Collin Allege? Collin’s memoir describes several forms of alleged mistreatment, including:

  • Physical abuse: He alleges that Kate dragged him by the ear, leaving it swollen and discolored, and on another occasion bound his wrists and ankles with zip ties before throwing him to the floor.
  • Emotional and verbal abuse: He says his mother called him hurtful names, portrayed him as dangerous or unstable and made him feel like a burden.
  • Confinement and isolation: Collin alleges that he spent extended periods locked in a specially designated room in the family’s unfinished basement, separated from his siblings and monitored by security cameras.
  • Separation from family: He claims his contact with his father was restricted and that his siblings were led to believe he was troubled and needed special treatment.
  • Removal from school: He says he was withdrawn from school after adults began asking questions about his circumstances, leaving him more isolated at home.
  • Psychiatric institutionalization: Collin alleges that he was admitted to Fairmount Behavioral Health System shortly before his 12th birthday and remained in treatment for approximately 21 months. He describes extensive medication, physical restraint and limited contact with family.

Collin also says he attempted to run away from home but returned because he had nowhere else to go. He alleges that his mother restrained him with zip ties after that attempt.

Collin Says He Has Documentary Evidence: During his On Purpose interview, Collin presented what he described as nursing admission notes from Fairmount. He said the records included a statement attributed to Kate acknowledging that she had a room she locked him in and that a psychiatrist had approved it.

He also discussed a child-protective-services report that he says documented his account of being restrained and having bruises. According to Collin, the investigation was ultimately classified as “unfounded.”

The records and their full context have not been independently verified here. Collin argues that they support his account, while the allegations remain disputed.

What Has Kate Gosselin Said? Kate has rejected Collin’s accusations. In June 2026, she described the allegations as “ridiculous” in comments on TikTok, according to E! News.

Kate has previously said Collin experienced serious behavioral challenges and received psychiatric treatment. Her representatives have not provided a detailed response to the latest allegations in the reports cited here.

In earlier comments, Kate also suggested that pursuing defamation claims against people who publicly accuse her would be difficult because she is a public figure. Her attorney previously argued that there are two sides to past events and that differing recollections make such allegations difficult to assess.

The disagreement reflects a longstanding family rift, with Collin challenging his mother’s account of his childhood and Kate maintaining that his behavioral problems required intervention.

What Does Father Jon Gosselin Say? Jon Gosselin has long had a strained relationship with Kate and has supported Collin’s efforts to tell his story. Collin says he eventually managed to get a letter to his father while receiving institutional care, prompting Jon to pursue a change in custody.

Jon has previously disputed claims that Collin had serious underlying psychiatric diagnoses, saying in a 2019 interview with the Daily Mail that he knew of no diagnosis beyond ADHD.

According to Collin’s account, Jon fought to bring him home after learning about his situation. Collin subsequently moved in with his father and sister Hannah.

Jon’s past statements provide important context, but they do not independently establish every allegation in the new memoir. A detailed new response from Jon to the specific claims publicized in October was not included in the three reports cited for this story.

Where Are the Gosselins Now? At 22, Collin says he is determined to use his experiences to draw attention to child abuse and the treatment of vulnerable children. His memoir recounts his childhood on reality television, his alleged mistreatment and his life after leaving his mother’s household.

He remains close to Jon and sister Hannah, who moved in with their father in 2018. Collin says he is estranged from Kate and six of his seven siblings. He has described the separation from his brothers and sisters as one of the most painful consequences of his childhood.

Jon has pursued a life beyond the family’s original reality-TV fame and has appeared on other television programs, including Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test. Kate has largely maintained a lower public profile than during the height of Jon & Kate Plus 8, while continuing to make occasional public comments. The other Gosselin children have largely stayed out of the latest dispute.

What’s Next? Collin’s memoir is likely to intensify public discussion about the Gosselin family, the pressures placed on children in reality television and the long-term consequences of growing up under constant public scrutiny.

The allegations may also renew questions about the family’s earlier public disputes and the handling of Collin’s childhood behavioral and mental-health concerns. However, the publication of a memoir does not itself establish that abuse occurred, and any legal or official developments would need to be assessed on their own evidence.

For now, Collin says he intends to continue speaking publicly and advocating for children who feel unable to report mistreatment. His account presents a starkly different picture of the family behind one of television’s most recognizable large-family shows, while the central allegations against Kate remain contested.
