After five years of treatment, Christina Applegate reveals she was misdiagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis
Christina Applegate is facing a frustrating new chapter in her health journey after revealing that her doctor says she was misdiagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS), a condition she believed she had been battling since 2021.
The 54-year-old actress, known for Dead to Me and Samantha Who?, shared the unexpected news on her MeSsy podcast, which she co-hosts with fellow actress and MS advocate Jamie-Lynn Sigler.
Rather than feeling relieved, Applegate said she remains confused and distressed because her symptoms have not improved. In fact, she said some have worsened.
“I’m back at square one where I don’t know what’s going on with me,” Applegate explained, describing the revelation as a shock. She also acknowledged feeling as though she had disappointed members of the MS community after years of speaking publicly about the disease.
Applegate first announced her MS diagnosis in 2021 after experiencing numbness in her feet. Since then, she has openly discussed the severe physical challenges she faces, including intense pain and difficulty walking. She has said she sometimes needs a wheelchair to get from her car into a doctor’s office.

Why Multiple Sclerosis Can Be Misdiagnosed: Medical experts say diagnosing MS can be difficult because no single test definitively confirms the disease. Physicians typically evaluate a patient’s symptoms, medical history, MRI scans and, in some cases, spinal fluid and blood tests. Monitoring symptoms and test results over time may also be necessary.
Other neurological and autoimmune conditions can produce symptoms or MRI findings that resemble MS, sometimes making an accurate diagnosis challenging. Experts cited by People noted that misdiagnosis is a recognized problem. One study published in 2019 found that approximately one in five patients diagnosed with MS had been incorrectly diagnosed, while some patients live for years before the mistake is discovered.
Jamie-Lynn Sigler, who has lived with MS for more than two decades, offered reassurance to her co-host, emphasizing that Applegate’s efforts to educate and support people affected by the disease still matter. For Applegate, however, the immediate priority is finding answers. Her experience has left her facing continued physical difficulties without a clear explanation for what is happening to her body.
The actress has previously spoken candidly about her struggles in her memoir, You with the Sad Eyes, and on her podcast. Her latest revelation underscores the uncertainty that can accompany complex neurological conditions—and the importance of continued medical investigation when a diagnosis no longer fits a patient’s symptoms.
