A Los Angeles man has been sentenced to life in federal prison after a federal jury found him guilty of selling the fentanyl that caused the death of a Vero Beach resident.

According to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, 39-year-old Alfonso Guerrero was convicted in May 2026 of distributing fentanyl resulting in death. Federal prosecutors said Guerrero sold a tenth of a gram of fentanyl to David Eller on May 16, 2023—an amount investigators said was enough to prove fatal.

Evidence presented during the trial showed the drug transaction was captured on a residential doorbell camera. Eller was later found dead inside his Vero Beach home just hours after the sale.

Authorities said Guerrero’s arrest came only two days later when investigators found him in possession of additional fentanyl intended for distribution.

The investigation was led by the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Unit, which worked alongside the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s Miami Field Division to trace the fatal overdose back to its source. The case was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida.

Sheriff Eric Flowers praised the work of detectives and federal investigators, saying the sentence reflects the agency’s commitment to holding drug dealers accountable.

“We will not tolerate drugs being sold in our community. I’m proud of our detectives and federal partners for the hard work they put into this investigation,” Flowers said.

Officials said the case demonstrates the close coordination between local and federal law enforcement agencies in investigating fatal fentanyl overdoses and pursuing criminal charges against those responsible for distributing the deadly drug.
