TRENTON, N.J. — A late-night block party turned deadly in Trenton early Sunday when multiple shooters opened fire into a crowd of about 100 people, killing two and injuring eight others, authorities said.
Police responded to the 100 block of Locust Street shortly after 12:25 a.m. Sunday following reports of multiple gunshots. When first responders arrived, they found 10 people suffering from gunshot wounds.
The victims who died were a 33-year-old woman and a 42-year-old man. Eight additional victims — two women and six men between the ages of 23 and 43 — were wounded and treated at a local hospital. Authorities said the surviving victims were stabilized.
Investigators recovered more than 50 spent shell casings from the scene, with gunfire also striking multiple vehicles.
According to police, the shooting began when multiple suspects approached the unauthorized gathering and fired into the crowd before fleeing. Authorities have not released descriptions of the suspects or identified a motive.
The Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office is leading the investigation. Detectives are reviewing surveillance footage and asking witnesses and anyone who captured photographs or video of the gathering to come forward.
Trenton Mayor Reed Gusciora called the shooting a devastating act of gun violence and expressed condolences to the victims’ families. He also urged residents to report suspicious activity and emphasized that block parties and similar gatherings require proper city permits and coordination with police.
Gusciora revealed that the 42-year-old man who was killed had recently been recognized for his efforts to rebuild his life following incarceration.
The shooting has left residents questioning how such a large gathering could escalate into deadly violence. Police officials said officers had been monitoring the crowd but acknowledged that the presence of law enforcement did not prevent the attack.
No arrests had been announced as of Monday morning. The investigation remains active.
