Hayden Panettiere’s sudden death has taken another heartbreaking turn, with multiple law-enforcement sources now reportedly saying the actress may have died after taking a single oxycodone pill that was secretly laced with fentanyl.

According to TMZ, sources familiar with the investigation say Panettiere obtained several black-market prescription drugs from a longtime drug dealer in Los Angeles before traveling to South Carolina. Authorities reportedly believe she took an oxycodone pill on the morning of her death on Aug. 16 and that the pill contained fentanyl. Toxicology results, however, remain pending, meaning her official cause of death has not yet been conclusively established.

Panettiere, who was just 36, was found unresponsive at a South Carolina residence shortly before her 37th birthday. Emergency responders were called to the home, where Narcan was reportedly administered before paramedics arrived. Investigators have said there were no apparent signs of trauma or foul play.

The reported circumstances surrounding her death are especially painful given how openly Panettiere had spoken about her struggles with addiction, alcohol and mental health. In her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, published only months before her death, she reflected candidly on the difficult experiences that shaped her life and career.

Born in New York, Panettiere began working as a child actress and became a familiar face to television audiences. She rose to international fame as Claire Bennet on NBC’s Heroes and later starred as country singer Juliette Barnes on Nashville. Her film credits included Remember the Titans, I Love You, Beth Cooper, Scream 4 and Scream VI.

She was also a mother to daughter Kaya, whom she shared with former heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko.

Her family remembered Panettiere not simply as a performer, but as a deeply loved daughter, mother, friend and force of nature. Her father, Skip Panettiere, described her following her death as “an incredible light” who brought enormous love and happiness to those around her.

Now, investigators in South Carolina and the Los Angeles area are reportedly examining where the suspected fatal pill came from. TMZ reports that the DEA is working to trace the pill and investigate Panettiere’s relationship with the alleged drug supplier.

For the many people who grew up watching Panettiere on television and in films, the news is a tragic reminder of the fragility of life—and of the woman behind the famous roles. Hayden Panettiere leaves behind a body of work that touched millions, along with family, friends and fans who continue to mourn a life that ended far too soon.
