Panettiere was found unresponsive at a Greenville, South Carolina, residence on August 16. First responders arrived shortly before 2 p.m. to a report of a woman in cardiac arrest and attempted to revive her before she was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:34 p.m. An autopsy found no trauma that contributed to her death, but the Greenville County Coroner’s Office has not released an official cause or manner of death, saying additional studies could take weeks or months.

Boyfriend reportedly administered Narcan

A new account from Zach Hickerson, the brother of Panettiere’s on-again, off-again boyfriend Brian Hickerson, provides additional details about the emergency response.

Zach said he went to the residence after Panettiere and Brian failed to respond to his calls and messages. He said the brothers discovered Panettiere unconscious, prompting him to call 911. According to Zach, Brian administered Narcan, also known as naloxone, before the two men performed CPR while waiting for firefighters and emergency medical personnel.

A police incident report also states that Brian showed an officer a bag containing medication Panettiere had been taking. Emergency dispatch audio reportedly referenced an apparent overdose, but authorities have not established an overdose as her official cause of death and toxicology results remain pending.

DEA reportedly joins investigation

The investigation has also reportedly expanded beyond local authorities. Multiple outlets report that agents with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) have become involved in the death investigation.

The Greenville County Coroner’s Office continues to await additional testing, while Greenville police investigate the circumstances surrounding Panettiere’s death and whether any criminal conduct occurred. Authorities initially reported no immediate signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances.

Panettiere’s representative said in a statement that the investigation remains ongoing and expressed hope that justice will be served.

Estranged mother questions final-hours timeline

Panettiere’s estranged mother, Lesley Vogel, has publicly questioned the account she says she received regarding her daughter’s final hours.

Vogel told the Daily Mail that she believes the timeline surrounding Panettiere’s last morning contains unanswered questions. She specifically questioned how Brian could have been asleep near Panettiere without realizing something was wrong. However, the claims and theories Vogel has raised have not been substantiated by publicly released evidence, and Brian has not been accused of a crime in connection with Panettiere’s death.

Vogel has also spoken about the complicated relationship she shared with her daughter and the family’s concerns about Brian. Panettiere had previously described their troubled relationship in her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning. Brian had been arrested in connection with domestic-violence incidents involving Panettiere and later pleaded no contest to two felony counts involving injury to a spouse or girlfriend.

Despite their estrangement, Vogel said she never stopped loving her daughter. Her grief is compounded by the 2023 death of Panettiere’s younger brother, Jansen Panettiere, who died at 28.

A life remembered as investigators search for answers

The developments come as family, friends and former colleagues mourn Panettiere, who would have turned 37 on August 21.

Zach Hickerson described her as one of his closest friends of eight years and said he was “beyond heartbroken and devastated” by her death. He also urged the public to allow investigators to establish the facts before drawing conclusions.

Panettiere’s career included memorable roles in Remember the Titans, Heroes and Nashville, as well as a singing career and three Teen Choice Awards. In her 2026 memoir, she openly discussed addiction, depression and the pressures she experienced as a young Hollywood star.

For now, the central questions surrounding her death remain unanswered. Authorities have not publicly determined the cause or manner of death, and the reported involvement of the DEA, pending toxicology and continuing local investigation could provide important answers in the weeks ahead.
